Located 140 miles from Sidney, this 32-mile open-air art gallery in the rural countryside west of Regent, the Enchanted Highway delights travelers with some of the world’s largest scrap metal sculptures. Created by local artist Gary Greff, a retired schoolteacher, this roadside spectacle transforms ordinary prairie highway 21 into a whimsical journey through giant geese, deer, grasshoppers, pheasants, and even a full “Tin Family.” Each sculpture site includes spacious pull-offs, interpretive kiosks, and picnic areas for visitors to explore and enjoy.

The journey begins at I‑94 Exit 72 near Gladstone with the “Geese in Flight” monument—the largest metal sculpture in the world—soaring over 100 feet into the sky. From there, the route leads past six more colossal works: “Deer Crossing,” “Grasshoppers in the Field,” “Fisherman’s Dream,” “Pheasants on the Prairie,” “Teddy Roosevelt Rides Again,” and the iconic “World’s Largest Tin Family,” culminating at the Enchanted Castle gift shop and motel in Regent.

This unique art tour is a testament to rural creativity and community spirit. Greff constructed the sculptures using recycled oil tanks and well pipe metal, placing them on land donated by local farmers. The State of North Dakota now helps maintain the route to ensure it remains a lasting tribute to small-town vision and artistry.

Plan your visit

  • Start at I‑94 Exit 72 and follow the numbered sculptures along Highway 21.
  • Each stop features parking, interpretive signage, and wheelchair access.
  • Enjoy a picnic or stretch your legs at rest stops between installations.
  • End your journey in Regent with a stay at the castle-themed motel.

Whether you’re making a quick photo stop or planning a scenic half-day adventure, the Enchanted Highway offers a delightful blend of art, humor, and big-sky charm—right off the interstate and off the beaten path.

Located 29 miles from Sidney, Fort Buford played a major role in frontier military history. The site offers guided tours, a reconstructed barracks, and seasonal programming that brings 19th-century military life to life.

Fort Buford’s History

Fort Buford was the result of the timbers from the Fort Union being sold to the U.S. Army, which constructed a military fort a few miles east of the post. The fort was constructed to protect settlers from the hostile Sioux Indians. The new fort housed five companies of soldiers and a few remnants of Northwestern Fur Company which continued to trade in buffalo hides until the bison were gone.

Over the next 25 years, Fort Buford was to see its share of highlights of war for the plains. At one time or another the fort housed such noted Indian prisoners as Chief Joseph, Crow King, Ran-In-The-Face and even the Hunkpapa Sioux Medicine Man and Sitting Bull.

Today, Fort Buford in maintained as a historical site by the State of North Dakota. There is a visitors center and a museum in one of the restored building on the grounds. A visit to the for is a must for anyone who wants to feel for the military life on the frontier during the latter part of the 19th century.

About 24 miles away, this reconstructed fur trading post lets visitors step into the 1800s. Interpretive exhibits, reenactments, and a visitor center share the story of trade between Plains Tribes and Euro-American merchants.

History of Fort Union

In October 1828, construction of the post was underway and it soon became the center of the Northern Rocky Mountain Fur Trade. At its peak in the 1830’s the post, along with other American Fur Company forts in the region sent to St. Louis an annual harvest of more than 25,000 beaver skins, 30,000 deer skins, and 55,000 buffalo hides. Historians today have come to call Fort Union the largest and most imposing trade post on the Missouri River.

During the mid 1830’s the decline of the fur trade began as textiles began to replace furs on the fashion scene. By the mid 1850’s ownership of the fort had changed hands several times as the demand for furs lessened each passing year. After a short period as the rendezvous point for the Great Northern Railroad survey crews, Fort Union as a money making enterprise ceased to exist.

Missouri River

A Legendary Waterway Just Down the Road

Only about 30 minutes from Sidney, the Missouri River offers a deeper dive into Montana’s historic landscape. This is where explorers, traders, and native cultures once traveled—and where today’s visitors come for wide-open water, striking bluffs, and a sense of quiet solitude.

The Missouri is a favorite for anglers targeting walleye and northern pike, especially around the bridge crossings near Culbertson or Fort Union. Birdwatchers and photographers flock to the area in spring and fall, when migratory birds fill the sky.

Local Tip:

Try the Missouri River Overlook near Fort Union or access near the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers at Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center. These spots offer panoramic views, river access, and historical context all in one stop.

Things to Do

  • Fish the cool, deep waters for a variety of sportfish.
  • Kayak or canoe the wide, slow-moving stretches.
  • Explore nearby Lewis & Clark sites and the Fort Union Trading Post.
  • Pack a picnic and watch the sunset from a bluff above the river.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Spring: Rising water levels, active birdlife, and great early-season fishing.
  • Summer: Hot days make for perfect paddling and longer exploration.
  • Fall: Crisp air, fewer crowds, and brilliant foliage along the banks.

Nearby Amenities

  • Interpretive centers, museums, and historic sites around the confluence area.
  • Lodging and outfitters can be found in Sidney, Culbertson, and Williston.

Starting as a small taco stand in Cheyenne, WY back in 1969, our one-of-a-kind tacos and other bold flavors were an instant hit in the community. Two local businessmen wanted to share these unique flavors with the world. So, they purchased the franchise rights in 1969 and named the restaurant after the man who started it all – John.

Ever since that very first taco stand, Taco John’s® has been all about bringing the flavor. From handmade salsas and classic Crispy Tacos with freshly-made shells to our signature Potato Olés®, we know how to Olé The Day.

From there, Taco John’s® restaurants began popping up across the Midwest, evolving to include drive-thrus and interior seating to bring you the unique flavors that made Taco John’s® famous. Our menu evolved to include bold originals like Potato Olés®, Meat and Potato Burritos, and our holiday specialty: Nachos Navidad®.

Ever hear of Taco Tuesday? We started it! That’s how seriously we take tacos.

Today, Taco John’s® operates and franchises more than 325 restaurants in 21 states – making it one of the largest Mexican quick-service restaurant brands in America.

We continue to grow across the country – but some things never change. Like our uncompromising standards of food quality, dedication to using real ingredients, signature bold flavors, and our commitment to Olé The Day!

Located on the corner of Holly and Central Ave, The Coffee Stop is a small, family-owned coffee shop that has quickly become a local favorite. Purchased in March of 2020 by Rich and Linda Gorde, the shop was once known as the Silver Junction, but under their ownership, it has evolved into something truly special. With a welcoming atmosphere and a menu full of delicious offerings, The Coffee Stop has established itself as a cornerstone of the Sidney community.

The Gorde family takes great pride in their business, which is very much a family affair. Both of their daughters, Madison and Makena, work at the shop, keeping the family legacy of service and dedication. Even before Rich and Linda took over ownership, one of their daughters was involved in the business, and over the years, the family has worked hard to evolve and grow.

“We have added products and improved over the years,” says Linda, reflecting on the journey of the shop. “We are proud of our menu and always aim to be accommodating to the community. Whether it’s a large order for a meeting or an event, we make sure to go in early and provide great service with a smile.”

Today, The Coffee Stop is run by a dedicated team of six employees who feel more like family than staff. It’s clear that the Gorde family values relationships – both with their employees and their customers. “The best thing about doing business in Sidney is the people. We have really good customers that we’ve gotten to know, and it’s definitely nice to live in a small town where we can get to know each other,” Linda shares.

Looking ahead, The Coffee Stop plans to continue improving its service and products, always open to ideas and feedback from the community. The Gordes believe that staying in touch with their customers and adapting to their needs is key to running a successful business.

For anyone in the area, a visit to The Coffee Stop is a must. Whether you’re stopping by for a cup of coffee, a pastry, or one of their famous breakfast burritos, you’re guaranteed to be greeted with a warm smile and top-notch service. The Coffee Stop is more than just a coffee shop – it’s a family that takes great pride in what they do. So, the next time you’re in the neighborhood, stop by, enjoy a bite, and say hello to this wonderful family business!
