Honey production requires year-round work and close coordination with nature. At Busy Bee Apiary, Derek and Angela Lawrance begin each year in Visalia, California, where they care for and feed their bees. In February, the bees are moved to almond and cherry orchards for pollination, then to hills and citrus orchards where they produce honey and new queen bees are introduced.

In May, the bees are transported to Montana for the summer honey season. There, they are placed in over 150 locations to collect nectar and store honey in “honey supers.” After harvest, the honey is processed through an automated system that extracts it from the comb, separates it from wax, and stores it in large tanks and totes for bottling. Some honey is bottled to share with farmers who host the hives.

Throughout the year, weather plays a critical role, affecting queen mating in California and flower growth in Montana. By late September, the bees are shipped back to California, where they are fed and cared for through the end of the year.

About 24 miles away, this reconstructed fur trading post lets visitors step into the 1800s. Interpretive exhibits, reenactments, and a visitor center share the story of trade between Plains Tribes and Euro-American merchants.

History of Fort Union

In October 1828, construction of the post was underway and it soon became the center of the Northern Rocky Mountain Fur Trade. At its peak in the 1830’s the post, along with other American Fur Company forts in the region sent to St. Louis an annual harvest of more than 25,000 beaver skins, 30,000 deer skins, and 55,000 buffalo hides. Historians today have come to call Fort Union the largest and most imposing trade post on the Missouri River.

During the mid 1830’s the decline of the fur trade began as textiles began to replace furs on the fashion scene. By the mid 1850’s ownership of the fort had changed hands several times as the demand for furs lessened each passing year. After a short period as the rendezvous point for the Great Northern Railroad survey crews, Fort Union as a money making enterprise ceased to exist.

The MonDak Heritage Center is Eastern Montana’s premier museum and the arts & cultural hub of Richland County, Montana. Local residents formed the Society in 1967 and opened a temporary museum known as the J.K. Ralston Museum and Art Center in 1972 in the “old hospital” in Sidney, Montana. Named after Ralston, the famed western artist and Richland County native, the Ralston Center operated for twelve years until the museum moved to the MonDak Heritage Center in 1984.

Dirt Arena

The Richland County Fairgrounds Dirt Arena is a versatile, state-of-the-art facility designed to make your event unforgettable. With an arena spanning 275 feet in length and 132 feet in width, the space is ideal for hosting a variety of events, from rodeos and barrel racing to demolition derbies, monster truck shows, and even concerts. The arena accommodates over 2,000 guests with comfortable seating options, including a covered grandstand with 1,068 seats, two satellite bleachers seating 160 and 192 guests, and an uncovered grandstand with 554 seats.

Our facility is thoughtfully equipped to meet all your event needs. The arena features 11 stock pens, a 200′ x 100′ fenced corral, and specialized equipment such as a calf chute and six bucking chutes. For event organizers, we provide a fully equipped rodeo office with modern amenities, including Wi-Fi, a full kitchen, a restroom with a shower, office space, and a lounge area. The Crow’s Nest offers an excellent vantage point for event coordination, while our high-quality sound system ensures every announcement, cheer, and musical performance is heard loud and clear. LED lights surround the arena making night shows a hit! Restrooms are easily accessible at the end of the grandstand in an adjacent building, which is equipped to handle food and beverage sales. Booths under the grandstand are available for rent for additional food vendors.

This arena is a year-round hub, hosting two PRCA Rodeos annually during the county fair as well as thrilling demolition derbies and monster truck events. The space is perfect for ranch rodeos, jousting events, tractor or horse pulls, and more.

The agency was incorporated on July 1, 1979 with one group home housing eight men and women, and a work activity center providing a day service program.  ROI has grown to two group homes with a capacity to serve a total of 14, a transitional living complex with a capacity to serve 7, and a supported living home with the capacity to serve 5 . In addition, ROI currently serves multiple people in the community with support from ROI or family.  ROI also provides multiple vocational services such as supported employment, recycling, and a retail Thrift Store .

Grass on the greens was planted in 1962, and the back 9 was completed in 1999. Now, Sidney Country Club is the only 18 hole golf course in the eastern half of the state.
