Poplar Cultural Museum

Located in Poplar, about 69 miles from Sidney, the Poplar Museum is housed in the town’s historic Tribal Jail, built around 1920 and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors tour the jail cells to view exhibits featuring intricately detailed Sioux and Assiniboine beadwork and quilt work—much of which is available for purchase. Intriguing historical markers include prisoners’ carved initials in the brick walls and metal rebar-lined ceilings installed after past escape attempts. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (June–Labor Day), the museum offers free admission, cultural insight, and a memorable stop on any regional history tour.
