Karen Olson-Beenken

President & CEO, Blue Rock Products

For Karen Olson-Beenken, leadership didn’t come from a long-term plan; it grew organically from homegrown roots and a deep commitment to community.  Born and raised in Sidney, Montana, Karen grew up around the very company she now leads. “I wasn’t planning to come back to it,” she recalls, “but my dad needed help, and I said I’d try it out for 3–5 years.” Three decades later, she’s still there helping guide the company forward while honoring the legacy that inspired her.

Before returning home, Karen launched her career with Dayton Hudson Corporation, now known as Macy’s and Target Corporation in Minneapolis. “Their management program was a phenomenal foundation,” she says. “It gave me experience in retail and wholesale, but also in working with people, customer service, and philanthropy. All those elements prepared me for the multifaceted nature of running a business like Blue Rock.”

Karen has been married to Eric Beenken of Bloomington, MN for nearly 34 years. Together, they raised two children, Luke and Lauren, both now living in Colorado, and share their home with three dogs who help keep their “empty nest” feeling full. “Raising my kids in Sidney is one of my proudest accomplishments,” she says. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see how much they value where they came from and how this community shaped them.”

While her professional life is busy, Karen always makes time for passions outside of work. “I love anything outdoors, biking, walking, and exploring new places. I also love to entertain and read.”  She enjoys taking classes at the Sidney Public Library or participating in programs at the MonDak Heritage Center.

Despite her confident presence today, Karen shares something that might surprise those who know her as a leader: “I was debilitatingly shy as a kid,” she admits. “It took a lot of work to come out of my shell. And despite being surrounded by agriculture, I am the world’s worst gardener!”

Her work and leadership don’t stop at Blue Rock. Karen is deeply involved in volunteer and advocacy work, serving on several national and regional boards, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, U.S. Chamber Small Business Council, Montana Soft Drink Association, and the National Beer and Wine Wholesalers Association. She is also a proud member of P.E.O., a leader in the Western U.S. business community, and an active participant at Pella Lutheran Church. She mentors young entrepreneurs, especially in underserved communities, a role she finds especially fulfilling. She was also instrumental in starting the leadership program through the Sidney Chamber of Commerce with Sharon Rau and Enid Huotari.

What drives her? It’s simple: people and purpose. “I love the people I work with. I love that no day is ever the same. I’ve never been bored. The challenges we face are often shared by others in business, and it’s inspiring to connect with those on similar journeys.”

Karen Olson-Beenken’s story is one of coming home and giving back. She’s proof that sometimes the unexpected path can become the most meaningful one and that strong roots can grow into remarkable leadership.
